Historical Romance
December Quinn takes readers to the 1200s in her
unique and interesting novel, BLACK DRAGON. When Lady
Isabelle inadvertently puts herself in danger and is
rescued by Gruffydd Hywel, she cannot believe she is
rescued by such a frightening man. Six years later,
Isabelle is even more astonished to learn that she is to
marry Gruffydd as part of a peace agreement between the
English and the Welsh. Isabelle believes herself be in
love with a gentle and peaceful man, William, who is a
musician. Resigned to being a political pawn, Isabelle
reluctantly marries Gruffydd and journeys with him back
to his home. Gruffydd has no desire for his wife, but
Isabelle’s tempting looks and personality make it hard
for him to stay away from her. A vow from long ago and a
powerful secret separate Isabelle and Gruffydd, but
somehow an attraction grows between them anyway. As
unrest surrounds the pair, a spy infiltrates their home
and conspires not only to murder Gruffydd, but also
destroy Isabelle as well. Gruffydd and Isabelle must
overcome their fears and learn to trust each other if
they are going to survive.
Well-written and historically accurate, BLACK DRAGON is
a novel sure to please historical fans. Readers will
greatly enjoy this unusual look at a time period that is
not nearly written about enough. Even more, however,
readers will fall in love with both Isabelle and
Gruffydd. Both characters are highly likeable, and their
star-crossed paths intersect so many times that it is
clear that they are meant for each other. Multiple
conflicts ensue throughout the course of the novel,
although the romance between the pair is clearly central
to the tale. Readers will be hooked all the way to the
final page. BLACK DRAGON is the first December Quinn
novel I’ve read, but it certainly won’t be my last!
