Goose bumps. I still have goose bumps running down my body while I am writing this review. Kat Martin writes an absolutely incredible story with SCENT OF ROSES. Based on true life events, this is one of the most compelling books I have read in a long, long time.

Elizabeth Connor is a family counselor in San Pico California. After a messy divorce, she has been quite content working in her sleepy home town.  The bright lights and big city of LA no longer hold any appeal to her. When one of her patients comes to her, concerned about his very pregnant sister, Elizabeth is not quite sure what to make of the girl’s story. Talking about ghosts, the scent of roses, and frigid cold in the California heat, all sounds like a pregnant woman’s hormones on overdrive. That is until Elizabeth stays in the house with Maria and experiences these things too.  Not sure where to turn, Elizabeth finds herself with reluctant helper Zach Harcourt.

Zach is the town’s bad boy. Into drinking and drugs as a youth, he has turned his life around and is now a high powered lawyer in LA. In his spare time he gives back to the community of his home town San Pico, by founding and helping to run a work program for troubled youths. His and Elizabeth’s paths have crossed in the past, and neither knows what to make of the other now that they are older.

Liz and Zach are fantastic characters. Doubting Thomas and Thomasina even when everything points towards ghosts really existing, they come across the pages as real and three dimensional. Their relationship grows slowly and realistically. The plot and sub stories are all interesting and the ending takes such an unexpected turn, I felt myself floored. This is an exceptionally well written book, one that you should not hesitate to pick up and one I had a very hard time putting down.
