Remember Manhattan 1899? Probably not. Elizabeth
Holland and Penelope Hayes are two young socialites who
truly believe the world belongs to them. Elizabeth’s
family has everything; class, sophistication and “old
money.” Penelope’s family has lots of money, but lacks
the elitist standing of the Holland family name.
Elizabeth considers Penelope her best friend. In turn,
Penelope does her best to be a “friend” to Elizabeth,
but in reality, she considers her a rival. Penelope’s
goal is to marry Henry Schoonmaker. Since she has been
secretly seeing Henry for months, Penelope is certain he
will propose.
Elizabeth isn’t as interested in matrimony, however, her
world changes when her mother informs her that she needs
to choose a husband soon. Since the recent death of
Elizabeth’s father, the family assets are dwindling. A
marriage to a wealthy family could save the Holland
family from becoming penniless.
Henry Schoonmaker’s father delivers an ultimatum to his
son. He has decided to run for mayor of New York City
and therefore, Henry must change his lifestyle. Instead
of partying every night, Henry’s father tells him he
needs to settle down and choose a wife. Of course, Henry
compliance is guaranteed when the elder Schoonmaker
threatens to cut off his inheritance. Mr. Schoonmaker
tells him he will ask Elizabeth Holland to become his
wife.
Does this create a problem? When Henry actually complies
with his father’s request, a huge rift is created
between Elizabeth and Penelope. Marriage to Henry wasn’t
part of Elizabeth’s plans, but she remembers her
mother’s request and agrees to the marriage.
This novel is listed as “young adult,” however, it will
appeal to readers of all ages. Ms. Godbersen does
inundate the storyline with secondary characters, but,
considering that this will be a continuing series, it
only serves to hint to the reader what her future novels
will entail. With an innovative beginning and an even
more interesting ending, this debut novel defines the
winning potential of this author.
