Something very peculiar happened to me while reading
this book which has not happened to me in a long log
time. I sat down to read ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE and was
not able to put the darn thing down! I read this book
(much to my chagrin) until 3AM. It has been so long
since a book has captured my imagination and interest to
such a degree that I threw caution to the wind, risking
a groggy day because I HAD to find out what happened to
our main characters.
Let me start, for those of you who are new to Ms.
Frost’s Night Huntress’s series, by saying, do not start
here. Turn around, go back and buy the first book and
read that before embarking on this story. While I
enjoyed reading this one, if I had not read the first
one, I would have had no idea what was going on. Cat
Crawfield is back, with a host of characters, to rid the
world of vampires. She has been recruited by a special
FBI task force to help keep this threat in check. Most
people have no idea vampires exist so they are a law
unto themselves. Cat does not care WHY she gets to kill
vampires, but after being brought up to hate them, she
is glad to have the excuse to have a license to kill.
There is one small blip in this ideal set up…she happens
to love a vampire. Having been forced to leave Bones
behind in the last story, this book picks up four years
later. Cat has not been able to forget about Bones, and
apparently he has not been able to forget about her
either. This book is about their reunion and ability to
make their relationship work.
Bones is a vampire bounty hunter for hire. He also kills
vampires, only not for revenge like Cat, but for money.
Cat has never left his mind, and even though she has
been put into protective custody of the government and
given a new identity, it is only a matter time before he
will find her again. Unfortunately, there are others out
looking for her too…and want her dead. ONE FOOT IN THE
GRAVE, is a ground laying book for more in the series.
Battle units are drawn, relationships are made, and
secrets are revealed. There is just a flow to this book
and series so far, that speaks to me. With so many
vampire series out on the market today, that sort of
threw me for a loop, I truly was not expecting it. Maybe
it is our vampire hero. Bones is a kickass hero,
ruthless and unforgiving. But he turns to putty in the
face of Cats love. Many authors try to convey this type
of relationship, and Ms. Frost nails it.
This is one series I am keeping my eye on and waiting
anxiously for the next installment.
