Kendall is living in her grandmother’s house free of
charge but with some constricting rules such as not
having any men live there. She thinks she can get
some female roommates who will pay her high enough
rent that she won’t have to work. Kendall is a little
indulged, a little self centered, struggling with
alcohol abuse, and difficult to take as a character.
She begins interviewing girls for the rooms and
eventually picks Anna who needs to escape her
engulfing family, Lelani with many past secrets living
in her aunts house with a bunch of little kids, and
Megan, living in a terrible roommate situation. They
all struggle together, eager to work this out with
Kendall.
Each chapter is told from a particular character’s
perspective so that readers get to understand the
motivations around the roommates as they try and live
together. There is a steady inspirational theme to
the book.
This is written in Melody Carlson’s usual style as she
uncovers the emotional aspects of the characters and
has them interact with each other and learn something
about themselves in the process. While for me the
book might have dragged a little at points, fans of
this author will like this novel.
