Historical Romance
MIRAGE is the newest release from author Monica
Burns. Set in the Victorian period, mostly in Egypt,
this is a story about love and trust between two people
who have been burned in the past. Ailtar is half
Bedouin, half English peer. Having gained no acceptance
in England, snubbed and ridiculed, he has always felt
more at home in the dessert with his mother’s people. He
has promised his English grandfather that he would spend
half his time in England, and honor bound to do so, he
has had a difficult life.
Alex Talbot is an American archeologist who is following
her father’s dreams. She has worked long and hard and
knows Egyptology and archeology better than most men do.
After her father and uncle’s unexpected deaths earlier
in the year, she is determined to continue on their
quest. Trying to gain respect of her peers has been
neigh on impossible, but she is resolute in her quest to
lead an expedition into the dessert to find Per-Ramsses.
This is an ancient site of the Pharaoh Ramesses and
burial place of his murdered queen Nourbese. Nothing
will stop Alex, not even repeated attempts on her life
nor idiotic museum curators.
MIRAGE is an interesting story that digs into
character’s behaviors, and not just skimming over their
descriptions. The plot, though with only one logical
conclusion, kept me wondering if that was indeed what
was going to happen. I kept turning the pages to see
what actually was going to take place. I have been
following the career of Ms. Burns for quite a while now
and still have not figured out why her books have not
garnered more enthusiasm or following in the romance
genre. Here is an author who is willing to take chances
with her characters and plots. I have yet to be
disappointed in anything that I have read from Ms.
Burns.
