Drake is a vampire and unlike most Guardians, he survives by feeding on victims. He is barely accepted by other Guardians, because they see him as a killer. When he again is suspected of killing innocents, his leader Eli sends him to Baltimore to assist Gabriel. Gabriel is a born vampire and has the attitude of a killer, although he does protect the innocent. He is more tolerable of Drakeʼs history and makes Drake his second in command. All of Gabrielʼs Guardians are fledglings and he needs Drakeʼs strength. When Gabriel goes missing, Drake is left in charge, although unwillingly, he will do whatever it takes to keep his Guardianʼs safe. When vamps from France come looking for Gabrielle, they are sorely disappointed to see Drake, who compared to them is a youngster.

Faith is a young vampire who like the Guardians has lived off animal blood. She and her sister Lily are part of the delegation from France. Faith is encouraged to use Drake in order to get information that the French delegation needs. Once Faith meets Drake though, she confides in him and lets him know exactly what her master, Armand has planned for Drake and his fellow Guardians. Drake must keep his people safe while at the same time find Gabrielle. Meanwhile, Drake has to accept his new feelings for Faith and try to walk the tight line between protecting innocence and reliving his past. When people start dying, trust becomes an issue and Drake may find that he will have to forgive himself in order to come to terms with the past.

HUNGER OF THE HEART is book four of the Guardian series. Jenna Black again shows her brilliance to paranormal fans with this latest edition. Drake makes an excellent hero who is trying to balance the good and the bad within him. Faith complements Drake and between the two of them, good should prevail.
