Historical (Erotica)

Rosalind Schuyler is in hiding. After her prominent father's death, she took the persona of a poker playing drifter by the name of Frank Carstairs. This was an easy feat for her, as her brothers had always took her about town as one of the men and had shown her the ropes. It was a good thing, too, because now, her life depended on her ability to disguise herself to everyone until her 25th birthday. On that day, she became in control of her considerable wealth and would no longer be prey to men like Nicholas Lennox, who wanted it all.

Captain Hal Lindsay was not fooled by her for any longer than it took to hear her laugh. He had heard that laugh before, in New York and been enamored of her then, just as he was now. Deciding to help with her masquerade, he offers her a bargain, free room and board on his boat, for her body. She finds that to be too good of an offer to resist.

The perils of the river are not all these two will have to deal with in their journey. Lennox is still looking for Rosalind and sees Hal as the threat he truly is. As these two men have never been able to see eye to eye, not only is Rosalind's life in danger, but Hal's is now, as well. The events that take place would be hair raising to the fiercest of men, but Hal and his motley crew are tougher than most and manage to see it through to the end. With the benefit of Hal's tutelage, both in the bedroom and out, Rosalind is more than up to the job, herself. Reliable to a fault, Hal is there for her throughout all her dilemmas, but each is unsure of where their hearts truly lie. After all, she is a railroad heiress and he is a cavalier riverboat captain. It is up to these two unique individuals to find the truth that lies in their heart.

Ms. Whiteside has done her research very well on this one. The details are rich and the emotions palpable. Along the way, we learn about life on the river and the effects of the railroad on this lost commodity. Passions run high and the boat is not the only thing steaming along. Hal and Rosalind produce quite a bit of the hot stuff, themselves. It is a treat to read of such a strong woman in the late 1800s. This is a truly wonderful tale of two lovers that endure a lot of heartache and come out on the right side of love. Bravo, Ms. Whiteside, this is the perfect follow up to THE IRISH DEVIL.
