When Lucy Connors finds
a handsome cowboy handcuffed to her bed on her birthday, she
learns that her friend Claire has given her a week's stay at The
Fantasy Ranch, an adults-only getaway in the Arizona desert
outside of Phoenix. Claire's gift includes a suitcase full
of the kind of clothing Lucy has never even dreamed of wearing.
Timid and repressed, Lucy accepts Claire's challenge to be a
little naughty for once in her life.
Judd Walker, former
cop turned private eye, has agreed to help his brother, Mason,
figure out who's behind repeated attempts to sabotage The
Fantasy Ranch. Judd has traced the problem to the travel
agency where Lucy works. Unfortunately, his undercover
disguise involves pretending to be a self-absorbed bimbo.
Judd is fascinated by the apparent contradictions in Lucy:
her beauty and her daring wardrobe are at odds with her
innocence and inexperience. After Judd eliminates Lucy
from his list of suspects, she volunteers to help him find the
culprit. As the temperature in the desert soars, so does
the heat in this steamy, sizzling story.
Lucy is an ideal
heroine. Her insecurities are charming; and her quick wit
provides plenty of comic relief. Judd's dismay at being
perceived as an empty-headed gigolo is amusing and endearing.
An industrial-sized box of condoms is a running gag throughout
the book, as is a character whose main wardrobe choice seems to
be pink cellophane. The friendship between Lucy and Claire
is believable, and the relationship between brothers Judd and
Mason is realistic. Fresh and snappy, the dialogue is
crackling with zingers; and the plot zips merrily along in a
well-balanced mixture of smiles and smoldering sensuality.
One very minor objection readers may have is the price of
various things, including the charity auction and Lucy's
makeover: sometimes listing a specific dollar amount can
take a reader out of the story.
