| When I received my copy of
SWEET HUSH and discovered that Disney Corporation purchased the
film rights more than six months prior to the publication, I had
two thoughts went through my head.
The first was that it must be a pretty emotional book for
them to have taken such a huge interest.
My second was I hope does not meet the “Disney
Emotion” sappiness levels that usually have the story becoming
completely unbelievable. I
am delighted to say the book hit me and hit me hard!
Welcome to Sweet Hush Apple Orchards, a
serene orchard owned and operated throughout the decades by
strong, determined, yet fair, women born “Hush McGillan.”
The current owner, Hush McGillan Thackery, has not had an
easy life. Her
father died when she was young, and her mother passed on a few
years later leaving sixteen-year-old Hush with a four-year-old
brother and an orchard to run.
Despite the odds, Hush has succeeded and become an
extremely successful businesswoman.
Hush is content, until her son, Davis, makes an
unexpected and very surprising visit.
Davis brings a lovely woman, Eddie, home,
and then drops a bombshell.
They have eloped and are expecting their first child.
Usually this would be a happy event, however Eddie is the
sheltered daughter of the President and First Lady of the United
States. Eddie had a
disagreement with her parents, particularly with her mother,
Edwina Jacobs. Edwina
is a bold woman who is determined to learn all she can about her
daughter’s new husband and mother-in-law, as well as getting
her daughter back. Feeling
cornered, Edwina calls in her nephew, Nick Jakobek, a retired
military man with a sordid past, to bring her daughter home.
Suddenly, Hush finds her family’s private
life on the front page of the newspapers, and for once she has
no idea how to handle it. With
secret service agents hovering on her land, the first lady
adamantly opposed to anything dealing with Hush, and the
handsome, yet mysterious, Nick, who threatens the walls Hush has
erected around her heart, Hush finds herself rethinking the
mistakes she has made, and where she now wants her path to lead.
SWEET HUSH comprises a vivid setting, rich,
three-dimensional characters, and seemingly impossible conflicts
and creates a gut-wrenching and heartwarming tale of love, loss,
betrayal and hope. Intense
emotions take the stage as two mothers, who only want the best
for their child, butt heads time and time again in a very
realistic manner. I
laughed and sobbed throughout this amazing story and was sad it
came to an end. There
is no doubt in my mind that this book with its lush setting,
honest look at relationships, and intriguing folklore would make
a fantastic movie. I
only hope Disney can cast it to fit my expectations! |
