| For
decades, the St. Claire family has felt they were cheated out of
the haunted mansion that is their rightful legacy.
While conducting a sightseeing tour of Old Galveston,
Aurora St. Claire (Rory) sees that it is up for sale, due to
bank foreclosure. She immediately gets off the boat and arranges
to meet with the banker in charge, Oliver "Chance"
Chancellor. With
his help, she puts together a business plan in order to ask for
a loan to convert the old place into a B and B, but is turned
down due to her lack of experience.
However, working with the handsome Chance has stirred up
feelings in both of them. He decides that he wants to be a
partner along with her and her two siblings, but more than that,
he wants to be with Rory. Despite
them being at opposite ends of the social spectrum, and the fact
that it has always been a foregone conclusion that Chance would
marry the very proper and sweet Paige, his childhood companion,
nothing can stop the blazing affair that he and Rory ignite.
It
is not just sex, though that is hot enough. What they share is
true love, and Chance knows he cannot settle for less with
Paige. However, her mother has the power to ruin all their
dreams if she finds out that he won't marry her daughter, even
though neither of them wants to wed the other. Knowing this,
Rory does her best to break things off with Chance, though it
will mean raising the child they have conceived alone. Will true
love win out for all of them?
Though
one might assume that this is a comedy, it is not. There are
serious issues raised with these complex characters; the
importance of knowing one's priorities, following dreams, and in
a daring move, the authors shines the spotlight on dyslexia by
making her heroine have that condition.
Rory has been handicapped by it all of her life, though
more from how she has seen herself because of it than anything
else. With Chance's help, she is able to form a new picture of
herself and acquire skills that open the world to her. In
return, she teaches him about love and freedom.
This is a very promising author. Hopefully, Rory's
siblings might someday come back with their own stories. |
