| Coming
off her highly successful and much adored "Englishmen in
Texas" series; Lorraine Heath once again shows why she is a
much loved and admired author.
Ms. Heath brings a little bit of Texas to London in TO
MARRY AN HEIRESS, and the charm of the story is about the real
road to wealth and happiness.
Devon Sheridan,
Earl of Huntingdon, needs an heiress.
Scoffing at suggestions that he marry for love, the only
course Devon has left to him is finding a woman to wed who can
bring a substantial sum to replenish his family's coffers.
Being impoverished has taken its toll on his family's
estate of Huntingdon. The
tenants are leaving and the home is falling into disrepair.
The only thing he has left is his title, and if he can
use that to regain the losses left to him, he will do just that.
Georgina Pierce
accompanies her father on a trip to London to visit her old
friend, Lauren Fairfield. Lauren's
mother married Chris Montgomery back in Texas and has been in
London for eight years now.
Unbeknownst to Georgina, her father wants to see her wed
to a London aristocrat and will use his money to get it.
Her father makes a deal with Devon; unlimited access to
his wealth in exchange for making Georgina believe Devon adores
her and wants to marry her of his own free will.
Once married,
Georgina and Devon share a passionate, tender night.
Just when Georgina thinks that perhaps there could be a
chance at love after all, her father suddenly dies.
Devon and Georgina are shocked to realize that her
father, notorious gambler, has gambled away all of the wealth he
had promised Devon. Hurt,
Devon lashes out at Georgina.
He not only has no money in which to restore his estate,
he now has new debts incurred by her father to pay.
Feeling betrayed, Devon closes himself off to Georgina.
Georgina,
however, is not going to just wither and die.
She will do whatever she can to help Devon out of his
situation, even if it means letting him go when she's through.
Even though Devon was promised wealth when he married
Georgina, he soon comes to realize that the measure of wealth is
not all about money.
For those of you
who loved her Texas series, Ms. Heath brings a little bit of
Texas with her to London in Georgina.
It was fun to read Georgina's exasperation in having to
learn all of those little rules that Englishwomen have.
There are some light touches, but there is a real serious
tone that gives this story it's true value.
Devon is honorable.
He doesn't just sit around doing nothing about his
situation; he tries to help it himself in ways other than
marrying. He is too
proud to ask his friends for help, not if he has even one last
card to play - his title. Georgina
is bound by her love for her father into agreeing to the
marriage. There are
expectations on both sides until her father dies.
When this happens, the rules change.
Both must consider and weigh the options left to them,
even if it means unexpected sacrifices.
I always love reading Ms. Heath's books, as she always
knows how to write such heart tugging scenes, rich settings and
deep characters. TO
MARRY AN HEIRESS is a rich and satisfying love story that only
Heath could write.
