Historical Romance
The year is 1918 and Julie Jones is busy raising her brothers and sisters on their Fertile, Missouri farm and helping her father, Jethro, in any way she
can. She doesn't have time to dream of romance, seeing the world or even being a flapper like the other girls her age.
When the town drunk threatens Julie and has her running for her life, she is rescued by his son, Evan Johnson, who is just home from the war. It doesn't
take long to realize that Evan is nothing like his father, and Julie finds herself falling fast. Evan begins to care for this girl from the edge of
town and is fascinated by her simple country life and her loving family.
Meanwhile, Birdie, a helpless widow, and her spoiled child will try to win Julie's father's heart and worm their way into his house. Will Jethro come
to his senses and realize what this woman really is?
The town will end up hiring a police chief named Corbin Appleby to keep an eye on their small town, but Corbin has come to Fertile for reasons of his
own, and he's out to see that justice is served. When yet another girl is raped, Birdie's lies will cause Evan to be brought
into jail. It's not until someone from Birdie's past comes into town that he is released, and Birdie and her daughter are on their way to Tennessee.
For long term Garlock fan's like myself, THE EDGE OF TOWN is a bit different than what we normally expect. Even though the love story is classic
Garlock, it took some time for her to establish all the characters in this book, which made it seem to drag some in the beginning. The extra element
of suspense in this novel will have you gripping the pages by the end of the book, however. |
