Eve
Abernathy has made quite a name for herself by publishing
scholarly articles about various hauntings. She has also published a book on the subject.
This is not a small achievement
for a single woman in 1885. Naturally, she is stunned to
learn that the house she has just purchased for herself is
haunted. The ghosts appear to be the spirits of the couple
who owned the house thirty years before. Town gossip has
it that the husband caught the wife in an infidelity and
murdered her in a jealous rage before killing himself.
Lucien
Thorpe is a "spirit releaser." He has had great
success in communicating with spirits, and convincing them to
move on and rest in peace. He is surprised to be summoned
by Eve. The two have worked together in
the past; but after a serious falling-out, he never thought he
would hear from her again.
Once
he arrives, he listens and watches in amazement as the two
spirits relive their final night. The disturbances
become more evident each night, as the anniversary of their
death grows closer. At the time Lucien arrives, a mere
five days before the anniversary, the ghosts can be seen and
heard almost as well as a living person.
This
book works so well on so many levels. The characters of
Lucien and Eve are well drawn and complete. They've each
made mistakes, and they both have their own point of view and pride.
Pride that could well stand in the way of their future happiness.
The evolving relationship between the two is very entertaining
to watch. The mystery of the ghosts and the murder/suicide
is also involving; as is the question of whether Lucien and Eve
can help the spirits find peace.
SHADES
OF MIDNIGHT combines an romance with thrilling
paranormal aspects and a dash of mystery to give
readers the best reading experience. This is an
instant keeper. There are currently two sequels planned
for later this year. I'm looking eagerly forward to
reading them both. For more information, please visit www.lindawinsteadjones.com.
