When Melissa Nelson reports that she was raped, the detectives do
not find the typical frightened, shamed victim who is terrified to
testify. Rather, Melissa is ready, willing, and able to do
whatever she has to to see her attacker behind bars. She even
tries to tell them what to do!
Something about her story does not ring true. Though plenty of
evidence is there to put the man away, he protests his
innocence, and Melissa's story is just too pat. Investigation
shows that she has not been totally truthful with the police; she
has a background in criminal law and a history with her attacker.
He had raped her sister, an act that lead to suicide. However, on
that and one other charge of rape, he got off on technicalities.
Is Melissa fabricating his current crime to make him pay for the
past?
When a new found faith, one that one of the policemen leads her
to, prompts her to confess, ironically, the victim is the one who
goes to jail while the rapist walks free. One of the cops, one who
loves her, vows to find real proof that will put the evil man away
for good. Can he? Will Melissa be able to survive prison and find
a purpose to what she has suffered? Will she learn how to forgive?
Moving and powerful, the second volume in the series surpasses
the first. Melissa's motives are ones that we can all identify
with easily, and though I am sure that the prison was downplayed
in it's brutality, there was still a great sense of danger during
her time there. The most interesting characters in the book
were also to be found in this section. JUSTIFIABLE MEANS
shows how God can work in the most adverse circumstances to bring
about miracles.
