After the sudden death of their father and paternal, billionaire grandparents, three-year-old twins Lizzie and Kara, “The Billion Dollar Babies”, find themselves in the loving care of their step-mother, Amanda.  Amanda vows to keep her promise to her late husband; she will raise the girls as her own.  However, the girls’ maternal grandparents realize the girls are their tickets to immense wealth.  They sue for custody and win, followed by a judgment that they will receive $300,000 a year until the girls’ eighteenth birthday.

Suddenly, Lizzie and Kara find themselves living in poverty while their abusive grandparents squander away the money.  Lizzie and Kara are repeatedly told that Amanda stole their birthright right out from under them.  Though Amanda watches them from a far, Kara and Lizzie learn to hate the woman that wrecked their life.

When their eighteenth birthday arrives, Amanda asks both girls to move into their mansion with her and gain an education so that they can take over the family business.  Can Amanda prove her unfailing love for both girls?  Lizzie realizes the truth rather quickly, but Kara’s hardened heart shows no forgiveness.  What will it take to win Kara’s trust?

Poignant and complex, COVENANT CHILD is another outstanding offering from Ms. Blackstock.  Masterful narrative, vivid characters and a stirring situation all paint an emotional tale of love, loss and most importantly, hope.  Regardless of Amanda’s tragic state of affairs, she relies heavily on hope, and her battle for justice evokes quite a number of tears along the way.

Following the story is a list of thought provoking reading guide questions.  I feel that COVENANT CHILD is a story that will have readers discussing for quite some time!
