The world of
Mera has a long history, dating back to a time when there were
gods of the earth, and gods of the sky. At that time, the gods
of the earth created a gemstone. They gave it to the gods of the
sky to show them that there was beauty on earth as well as in
the sky. The king of the sky-gods set the gemstone in his crown.
As time went on, he became corrupt and decided to take over the
earth as well. In the battle, the Stone of the Sky fell to
earth. At that time, two prophecies were made. First, that the
followers of the evil Sky King would one day overrun the earth.
And second, that there would come a girl who would be able to
set things right.
The first of the prophecies has come to pass. Khalazar, who has
appointed himself a God-King has terrorized the lands with his
army. People are looking for someone to fulfill the second
prophecy. Damion is a priest who is unsure about the validity of
scrolls he has found. Ailia is a girl from a fishing village who
has a true gift for storytelling. Lorelyn is an orphan who has
visions. Together, they will travel to the seat of power,
attempting to set the world right again.
The author has won numerous awards for her young-adult fiction,
and the experience certainly shows here. Although the basic
premise has been used many time before, this time it sparkles
with original touches and characters. A glossary of terms and
characters; and, most appreciated, a guide to pronouncing the
names, is included. This is intended to be the first of a
series. However, instead of leaving the reader frustrated with a
cliffhanger ending that will have to wait a year or so to be
resolved, this story feels complete itself. Clearly, there is
much more to tell. I'll be anxiously awaiting the next volume. |
