Two
new arrivals in Burnt Rock make Marshall Ben Flood’s job a
little harder. By
now it is no mystery that Ben is taken with a lady rancher, Lee
Morgan. Ben tries
hard to woo her without being pushy, but it becomes apparent
that she is developing a strong admiration for the town’s new
preacher, Reverend Warner.
Is it merely Lee’s growing affections toward the man
that sets Ben’s teeth on edge or is there something more
sinister afoot?
After
the second arrival, a young drifter, suddenly disappears.
Ben finds himself pushed by the reverend to go search for
the boy who probably just moved on.
When Ben finds the boy dying from a gunshot wound, his
focus must stay on the case and not on winning Lee’s heart.
I
have enjoyed this series from the beginning, and by the end of
the book it became apparent that the series is not over yet.
So there will most likely be more West Texas Sunrise
books out in the future. A
lot of the situations between Ben and Lee are still open,
awaiting resolution.
For
me the mystery behind the drifter’s death was pretty simple to
figure out, so that was no huge baffling mystery; but the focus
of the story is more on Lee and Ben’s relationship anyway.
Characters are like family by now, but for those new to
the series, you will find this story stands alone well.
You do not need to have read the previous books to
understand the relationships with the townspeople.
However, I feel you would benefit from watching Lee and
Ben’s relationship evolve over the span of all three books.
