Caroline
Fletcher is from a wealthy slave-holding family; but from the
time she was a little girl, she had different beliefs on how
their slaves should be treated.
As she grows into a young woman, she starts to see how
cruel slaves are treated, not like the ones she calls friends,
who have helped raise her and her faith has remained strong.
Caroline grows from a young woman into an
adult, and she details her account during the Civil War.
As the Civil War starts Caroline finds out that writing
paper is too expensive, so she begins to tear pieces of her
wallpaper to write this journal.
As the years go
by, Caroline tells of all her triumphs and tragedies.
How her fiancé Charles and her cousin Jonathan both go
off to fight for what they believe in, but Caroline has her
doubts. When her
father George goes off to sail his ships, Caroline is left with
her father’s slaves to take care of her.
And to her, all the slaves, Tessie, Eli, Gilbert, Ruby,
and Esther, left at home are just like family to her. As the war
continues, Caroline and her friend Sally help whenever they can.
Their faith in God is stronger than ever, as they pray
daily that this war will come to an end, and that their loved
ones will come home safety.
