Angelica Amante is a high powered young lawyer in New York City. Soon to be offered a position as a junior partner, she has worked long and hard to achieve this success. Yet, the prominent law firm she has given so much to is involved in legal work that potentially hurts illegal Mexican immigrants. Much of the early part of the book is devoted to her angst over this and her ultimate decision to return home to her parents ranch, Regalo Grande, in Sonoma, California. Raised in privilege, she returns home feeling some personal shame about disappointing her parents and losing the job they thought marked her success.
At the same time Angelica is going through her personal career trials, Antonio Perez, a handsome young Mexican, has decided to leave the poverty of his family and to cross over into the United States. He ends up on Regalo Grande and begins working as a laborer. There he meets Angelica, the rich owner’s daughter, totally opposite of him in education and class.
This is a gentle, lovely novel punctuated by many references to faith and a belief in God. The predominant emotional support for Angelica is Poppy, the elderly Greek immigrant who has loved and supported her throughout her life. His devout faith has been passed to Angelica. Antonio shares these beliefs.
This novel is, at heart, a love story about two very different people united through their faith. It is also the story of Angelica’s break from her upbringing, her parents’ burgeoning financial stresses, and her self-discovery of herself as an attorney.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it especially heartwarming and realistic in its depiction of the characters. The author has crafted a novel sure to give readers joy and hope. At its center is a message about Christian faith and the ways people choose to express this in their lives. |
