Inspirational Drama (Romantic leanings)

Readers find themselves drawn back into the hustle and bustle of Dogwood Springs, Missouri where Dr. Grant Sheldon now raises his twin teenagers, Beau and Brooke, while he makes sense of his feelings for Nurse Lauren McCaffrey on top of working in the busy E.R.  Grant’s day starts off as usual as he treats a multitude of patients for various problems, some more perplexing than others.

William Butler, the hospital’s administrator, shows up at the E.R. with chest pains, dizziness, numbness and slurred speech, yet there is no sign of heart problems or a stroke.  A local man with asthma comes in suffering from an intense asthma attack, but he reeks of chemicals and leaves against medical advice.  And worst yet, Grant’s twins and their best friend, Evan Webster, are brought in following a hit and run.  Someone intended to do them harm, but Beau is determined to keep the truth behind the accident from his father.

On the more personal front, Grant tries to decide whether he is ready to add Lauren to his life.  The twins adore her, but can he move beyond memories of his deceased wife?

I adored the first installment of “The Healing Touch” series, SECOND OPINION, which came out in April 2002.  NECESSARY MEASURES brings readers back to this wonderfully realistic town and all its hopes, joys and dilemmas.  I find the stories reminiscent of the acclaimed show, ER, but with a more homey feeling.  You easily become part of the Dogwood Springs community.

The Hannah Alexander writing team fill each book with precise medical know-how, three-dimensional characters that either have you climbing walls or laughing with them, and a fast pace that keeps you engrossed long into the night.  The grim realities of life and death are not ignored or glossed over.  NECESSARY MEASURES shows that above all, doctors are human too.  They have their own fears and frustrations that make the job so much more difficult in certain circumstances.  Regardless, they have to try their best and find peace with situations that may not turn out as they had hoped.
