Dr. Lukas Bower is seeking a new start in a small town
hospital after being driven out unjustly from a big city
practice. But he finds his new life endangered when he comes
into conflict with the powers that be over almost everything he
does. One doctor especially seems to have it in for him after
Lukas catches him on an error.
Mercy Richmond is one ally in his quest to heal. Though she
does not have the deep faith he does, she is equally committed
to going above and beyond the call of duty. Mercy has her own
problems. Her pre-teen daughter lives with her no count,
alcoholic ex-husband, and it is possible that the child is being
abused.
Together and separately, they confront their personal issues
and care for people. From a five hundred pound man to a man who
is constantly being injured by his pet lion, they give each case
their best.
There are a dozen small plot threads woven together to create
this book. Though compared to ER, I found it more enjoyable,
wishing that I could have a doctor like Lukas. He is the kind of
doctor we all wish for. His faith and prayer is the strongest,
most profound aspect of the novel. It is often thought that
Christianity and medicine are to be enemies. This shows that
they can be allies.
HANNAH ALEXANDER is a pen name for the writing collaboration
of Cheryl and Melvin Hodde. They chose the name "Hannah
Alexander" to incorporate their two names into one. They
have read that Hannah means "her hope is in the Lord,"
and Alexander means, "servant of mankind."
