Historical Romance

Amidst the upheaval of Cromwell's Britain, Jamie Sinclair's wit and military prowess has served him well.  Leading a troop in Scotland, he impetuously marries a captured maiden, saving her from a grim fate.  A Highlands heiress to title and fortune, Catherine Drummond is not the woman Jamie believes her to be. When her people affect her rescue, and he cannot annul the marriage, Jamie goes to recapture his hellcat of a new wife.  In a world where family and creed cannot be trusted, where faith fuels intolerance and war, Catherine and Jamie test the bounds of loyalty, friendship, and trust.

What seemed like an ignition to a firestorm of romantic adventures sadly fizzles out.  This is where I became a little disappointed in HIGHLAND REBEL.  Don’t get me wrong, Judith James is an exceptional writer.  You actually forget you are holding this book and turning pages, she makes you feel like you are there with Jaime and Catherine.  You can smell the pungent odors from the battlefield scenes, or see the escapades that they have when they are back together in London.

The extensive historical details that Ms. James includes are phenomenal, but my personal tastes would have preferred more romantic details and fewer historical details.  I feel it’s a little slow in places which made me almost want to skim over pages to get to the passionate scenes.  HIGHLAND REBEL is not a simple story of romance and happily ever after.  But, by the end of the book, I was very glad that I had read it.  Judith James is so very talented to combine such a heartwarming love story and historical data and have it turn out so well.
