Women’s Fiction

Tale of two sisters? At the age of twenty-two, Augustina lost her mother in a terrible car accident. Her father ended up with a spinal cord injury that left him with only the use of his arms and hands. So, for the next six years, she voluntarily assumes his care. As a pastor, he still attends to his duties at church, but confined to a wheelchair, means he can’t live alone.

What happened to Saphi, Augustina’s sister? Well, shortly after their parent’s accident, she just left. Augustina tried to find her and when she reported her disappearance to the police, they told her there was nothing they could do, Saphi was eighteen. Her departure meant the end to Augustina’s plans to enroll in the graduate program at John Hopkins. So, to accommodate her father’s schedule, she began tutoring college students at nearby St. Louis University.

Actually, Augustina enjoys tutoring, having to put her life on hold doesn’t really bother her. She is engaged to marry Colton, a paralegal at a local law firm. However, Colton doesn’t come without some baggage. His mother, Lorraine, wants only the best for her son, so she is intent on molding Augustina into the perfect wife for him.

Both Augustina and her father are surprised when Saphi returns home. Saphi and Augustina’s childhood relationship consisted of numerous sibling fights. They resume their roles the minute Saphi walks in the door. However, this time around she has a different perspective on life. Without reservations, she begins to critique Augustina’s life choices. Has Saphi returned just to exact revenge? Or does she really want the best for her sister?

I do have to confess, one of my favorite storylines is the relationship between sisters. Ms. Brichoux expertly explores all the components in that mystifying sibling relationship. The focus of the story shifts between the sisters’ childhood and adult relationships, and some readers may find this distracting. However, it skillfully serves to enhance the character development of the two protagonists.
