Rhiannon, the evil queen of the Seelie Court,
demands no less than all Unseelie Fae, half-human and half-faery,
to be killed. A feat
she is sure has been completed, until her people sense a powerful
new Unseelie Fae within the town borders.
Trapped by a contract of indenture, Mina Cole
will spend years working as a slave in the factories to pay off
her life debt. While
Mina senses she is different, until Duncan RiDahn enters her life,
she has no idea how much power she holds.
Duncan knows she is Unseelie Fae and plans to teach her how
to use her powers. However,
the extent of her power also terrifies him.
Duncan’s first love was also powerful, but
she died following a face-off with the queen thirty-five years
ago. The battle left
Duncan paralyzed, and he feels no woman could ever love him again.
When Mina’s attentions become obvious, Duncan fears not
only for Mina, but also for the Unseelie Fae who he has worked to
band together to form a safe community. Only one woman can make or break what he has spent years
building, that woman is Mina.
While I am not a big fantasy fan, WINTER’S
ORPHAN grabbed my attention from the start. The fast-pace, chilling creatures, and lively dialogue
captures the reader and takes them to a whole new time and place.
I had a hard time believing that Duncan and Mina could find
any common bond; they do form a tender relationship that leads to
true passion.
