WRITING THE FICTION SYNOPSIS: A STEP BY STEP APPROACH by Pam McCutcheon, from Gryphon Books. I'm the type of writer who is never quite sure where my characters are taking me until I get there, but this isn't a satisfactory explanation to my editor, who is buying my book on proposal.  So for me, writing a really good synopsis is a perpetual learning experience (okay, I'm really bad at them, if you have to know).  I've met Pam McCutcheon as she's a local Colorado author, and I can't wait to hear what she has to say on the subject.  So I hope Santa puts this "learning" book in my stocking!

BETWEEN FRIENDS, by Debbie Macomber, from Mira Books. I've long been a fan of Debbie's, starting from her "angel" Christmas stories.  And since it's been awhile since I've read anything of hers, I wanted to make sure she was on my list this year.

A REGENCY CHRISTMAS, including novellas by Sandra Heath, Carla Kelly, Edith Layton, Amanda McCabe, and Barbara Metzger, from Signet. I write contemporary romance, so when it's time to relax, I curl up with a good historical.  And I can't think of anything I'd like more than to curl up next to the fireplace, in front of the Christmas tree, and read several delightful novellas from one of my favorite time periods.

THE HIGHLAND ROGUES: THE WARRIOR BRIDE by Lois Greiman, from Avon. I've never read Lois before, but the Scot in me (clan McIntosh, and proud of it!) can't resist a good Highlands novel.  This one was especially appealing, as the heroine is masquerading as a man.  Och!  I canna wait to read it!

LACEY'S RETREAT by Lenora Worth, by Steeple Hill.  I guess you'd call this one "research," but I call it just plain fun.  I'm always on the lookout for Lenora's next novel.  She writes wonderful heroes and delightful stories I just can't put down.  "Research?"  Sure--whatever you say!

This isn't an easy question! So many books, so little time... <g> But if I had to narrow it down to five choices, I guess they would be these:

SEX AND THE CITY: KISS AND TELL by Amy Sohn... to read while sipping peppermint candy-cane Cosmopolitans!

A PEANUTS CHRISTMAS by Charles M. Schulz. Maybe this year Charlie Brown will get the *good* Christmas tree...

POTTERY BARN CHRISTMAS CATALOG    by Pottery Barn. What do you mean it's not a book? I read it from cover to cover!

HOME SWELL HOME: DESIGNING YOUR DREAM PAD by Cynthia Rowley and Ilene Rosenzweig. Redecorating after hauling out the Christmas tree has never been so fun -- or so cool.

THE BAD GIRL'S GUIDE TO THE PARTY LIFE by Cameron Tuttle (illustrated by Susannah Bettag). What could be more perfect to prep for a New Year's Eve party?

Best wishes,

Lisa

Only five books?  That's cruel!

For Fiction (none of these are actually out at Christmas, but they will be soon after:

NIGHT FIRES by Karen Harbaugh is a March release, but I read a galley to give her a quote, and it's a fabulous book--smart, fast, emotional, and very sexy.  A major aspect of the story is something I usually don't even like, but Harbaugh handles it with irresistible brilliance.  Even though I've read the story once, I want a real copy of my own.

THE MOON'S SHADOW by Catherine Asaro.  She writes very romantic science fiction, and this is the next book in her Skolian series.  Every one of them has been great, and I'm sure this one will be, also.

MARCH TO THE STARS by David Weber and John Ringo.  This is the last volume of a science fiction trilogy that some friendly booksellers got me hooked on.  It's fast-moving space opera that features spoiled Prince Roger, who was a total jerk at the beginning but he started shaping up fast when he and an entourage of space Marines were marooned on a hostile planet and have to march halfway around the world to escape.  It's a January release.

As to non-fiction:

SMALL WONDER by Barbara Kingsolver.  This is a book of her wonderfully intelligent, funny essays.  Her piece on how and why she keeps television out of her house is masterful, and yes, funny.

BY THE SWORD: A History of Gladiators, Musketeers, Samurai, Swashbucklers, and Olympic Champions by Richard A. Cohen.  I read a review of this book (a November release), and just have to have it.  It has all kinds of material, from the social history of swordsmanship to the kind of wounds different blades make.  Just what every historical author needs!

Mary Jo, hoping this isn't too long

Easy question!!

Maggie Osborne's, SAMANTHA’S HUSBAND. This is an out of print book. I have everything of Maggie Osborne's except this one and I would love to have it for my collection.

THE SCOUTS, Time-Life. I have the entire Time-Life Old West series, except this one elusive book.

Rodale Synonym Finder. Because I love words and word books and I don't own this particular one.

Silhouette Intimate Moments #791 Kate Hathaway, BAD FOR EACH OTHER. I loaned mine out and never got it back. Loved that book.

Andrew Postman, NOW I KNOW. Years ago in a waiting room, I read a fascinating magazine article by this guy and never found his book.

That's it!

Cheryl
